Opportunity Details

Join us for a mentored summer internship in East Africa! Experience three countries: Rwanda, Kenya, and Ethiopia.

The internship begins in Rwanda, where interns will have training in cross-cultural missions, church planting, evangelism, spiritual development, and children’s ministry in Africa. Next, interns will travel to both Kenya and Ethiopia for more mentorship and hands-on practical ministry. Finally, there will be a short debrief back in Rwanda. Each country offers its own unique learning experience and contextually-specific ministry opportunities. Interns can look forward diverse opportunities and challenges and expect to be pushed out of their comfort zones.

Rwanda: Often called the Switzerland of Africa, Kigali is beautiful, modern, and clean. It is also considered the safest city in Africa with a bright future. However, local churches face significant challenges and limitations that make missions here both crucial and complex. You will have a unique opportunity to learn from local churches about the trials, opportunities, and lessons involved in ministry in a fast-developing African country.

Kenya: You will be exposed to the challenges of missions and mission ideology in a rapidly changing society, as well as competing religious and humanitarian agendas that seek to shape society. You will focus on the local church and the rich diversity of theological perspectives that inform its life and witness today. Finally, you will volunteer with churches in rural areas—encouraging congregations, serving through biblical teaching and sharing, and participating in community development efforts.

Ethiopia is a diverse country with an ancient history. Economic and spiritual poverty afflict many communities and though Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity has deep roots and Protestant churches abound, prosperity gospel teachings are common and Islam is quickly spreading. Interns will meet Ethiopian Presbyterian church leaders, shadow MTW missionaries in their daily work, worship with local congregations, and learn why understanding an Ethiopian language is essential.

Come explore your gifts and calling and test them to discern God’s leading. Experience a rich mix of teaching times and hands-on ministry, collaborating with several organizations, and life with our close-knit, diverse teams in East Africa.

Dates: June 24-August 5
