In Riga, there is a small Reformed seminary producing qualified young pastors that are interested in church planting. But they need help. Almost all the Christians in Riga are first generation Christians, so these pastors have no experience in church planting and no examples to follow. They are hesitant to plant a church without someone who is reliable and trustworthy to work with them. We are looking for mentors—men who can come alongside these pastors to pray with them, encourage them, and guide them.
Latvia is a post-Soviet country with deep issues of mistrust as a result of 50 years of occupation. It is sometimes hard to develop friendships, but once you do, relationships run deep. Though there are a lot of English speakers, a willingness to learn and use the language will open many doors. If you’re a ruling elder or pastor looking for an opportunity to help grow the church through mentoring, this could be a very rewarding place to use your gifts.
