Why Pursue a Diverse Missions Force?

Why pursue a diverse missions force? We believe the beauty of the kingdom of God is expressed in people from every tribe, tongue, and nation (Rev. 7:9). The more diverse our church and missions communities, the better we reflect God’s kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven.

A Strong Commitment to a Diverse Missions Force

We also believe that a diverse missions force can serve as a powerful apologetic—communicating that Christianity is not the religion of a single nation or race, but is for all people. As diverse teams of MTW missionaries minister in places where there is ethnic conflict or hostility, they are able to bring hope of reconciliation and peace as they model unity in diversity through the gospel.

Finally, the demographics of the United States are becoming more and more diverse, and we anticipate that this growing diversity will be reflected in our churches. Even now, our missions force does not reflect the ethnic diversity we already have in our denomination.

MTW’s vision is to see the gospel of the kingdom advance throughout the world. Our mission is making disciples among nations. Pursuing this vision and mission in a God-honoring, strategic, gospel-driven manner means pursuing a more diverse missions force. We need the voices, perspectives, and gifts of our African American, Asian American, and Hispanic/Latino brothers and sisters.

YOU CAN HELP

To help send out this diverse community, MTW is putting together a strategic network of churches and presbyteries committed to partnering with, supporting, and sending missionaries from diverse backgrounds: The Diversifi Partnership.

Some Presbyterian Church in America or other Reformed churches have financial resources and are interested in sending people of color as missionaries, but don’t have POC in their congregations to send. Other churches have people of diverse backgrounds to send, but lack the financial networks needed to get their missionaries to the field. The Diversifi Partnership seeks to close this gap.

When your church joins the Diversifi Partnership, you will be contacted by someone in your regional MTW hub who will be able to connect you with people of color who wish to serve in missions. You may be able to send them on a field visit, or financially back a longer-term missionary. And if you have POC to send, you will be part of a network of churches that are eager to support them because they believe God is glorified when all peoples are sent to all the nations.

Diversifi Partnership members will also receive regular updates on MTW’s diversity initiative progress so that you will be informed and encouraged, witnessing the return on your kingdom investment.

DOXOLOGY THROUGH DIVERSITY

In the PCA’s “Ad Interim Report on Racial Reconciliation,” the authors wrote:

“Our goal is not to seek diversity as an end in itself because this would be too small an endeavor relative to God’s mission. Rather, the great end of this pursuit is doxology through diversity. Our goal should be to glorify our Savior by cultivating a cross-cultural community that maintains a cross-cultural witness to the grace and glory of God.”

These words cut to the heart of our goal with the Diversifi Partnership. Sending a more diverse missionary force will allow MTW to better serve the mission field, better share the gospel and advance the kingdom of God, and better reflect the imago Dei. Your church may not have diverse people in your congregation to send as missionaries, but you can still be a part of this important initiative and help send all of the Reformed community—in all its beautiful diversity—to the ends of the earth.
