Tom and Mylicah Smith believe the Lord is calling them to the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians in Cherokee, North Carolina. They plan to do outreach and discipleship in the context of the local MTW church plant. The Smiths will join MTW missionaries Scott and Ruth Hill who have planted Grace Community Church of Cherokee.

While many Cherokee have heard a gospel invitation to come to Jesus, few have understood the good news of the kingdom, salvation from their sins, reconciliation with God, or have been taught to obey all which Jesus commanded (Mt. 28:20). Tom and Mylicah wish to serve members of the Cherokee tribe, build relationships, tell the good news of the kingdom, and disciple those whom God gathers into Grace Community Church. The long-term goal is to see God raise up indigenous men who will become pastors and elders.

As a teaching elder in the PCA, Tom has discipled others as an associate pastor in Pennsylvania and as a missionary in Croatia. Mylicah’s Iowa farm-life and nursing background has given her much experience in empathy, listening to others, and finding ways to solve problems. Tom and Mylicah realize that it will take time to demonstrate love and build relationships and trust among the Cherokee. Their encouragement comes from Christ’s Great Commission that all authority has been given to Him and that He is with them always. All ministry is by God’s mercy (2 Cor. 4:1) and hearts will be changed by God’s Spirit (2 Cor.4:6).
