The Lord is calling Tom and Mylicah to the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians. They plan to do outreach, evangelism, and discipleship in the context of the MTW church plant Grace Community Church of Cherokee started by their team leader Scott Hill and his wife, Ruth.

While some Cherokee have heard a gospel invitation to “come to Jesus,” few have been taught to obey all that Jesus commanded (Mt.28:20). The long-term goal is to see God raise up Indigenous men as pastors and elders for Grace Community and to go out as future missionaries to others.

As a teaching elder in the PCA, Tom has discipled others as an associate pastor in Pennsylvania and as a missionary in Croatia. Mylicah’s Iowa farm life and nursing background has equipped her with much experience in empathy, listening to others, and finding ways to solve problems. The Smiths realize it will take time to demonstrate love, build relationships, and trust among the Cherokee. Their encouragement comes from Christ’s Great Commission that all authority has been given to Him, and He is with them always. All ministry is by God’s grace and hearts will be changed by God’s Spirit (2 Cor.4:1-6).
