Culbertson, Ryan & Karen

Serving in Mexico | Acct # 11350

Ryan and Karen Culbertson serve in the border town of Reynosa, Mexico, in partnership with Isaiah 55 Ministries, an evangelical outreach to the deaf and disenfranchised peoples of the city. Both have always felt strongly about missions, serving in their early years with Young Life ministries and as members of their church missions committee. After a short-term trip to Reynosa in the summer of 2009 they were called to full-time missionary work.

Ryan’s primary role with Isaiah 55 is community outreach and development. He helps to run and organize Isaiah 55’s community center in the neighborhood of Aquiles Serdan near the city’s red-light district. Currently the center is open several days a week hosting computer, art, sewing, and Bible classes, guitar lessons, tutoring, and medical clinics. Plans are in the works to add art therapy, graphic design, ESL, welding, cooking classes, and screen printing, all with the ultimate goal of sharing the hope of Christ. Ryan also assists with short-term teams throughout the year and special projects.

Karen homeschools their two children. She also serves as special advisor to Instituto Isaías 55, the mission’s school for the deaf. Working directly with the teachers and staff of the school, Karen is helping to encourage a Christ-centered curriculum for deaf education that will be shared thoughout Mexico.

The Culbertsons also lead a summer internship program for college students focusing on discipleship and community building, which they are extremely passionate about.
